The cost of fuel in France

Bluefrenchlifeblock03040THE impact on the cost of running your car and heating your house will be being felt by practically everyone as oil prices rise.

So having an awareness of past prices and what average costs are may help you with planning for the future, and ensure you won’t be ripped off.

The Finance Ministry has put together a database of fuel prices for both petrol and domestic heating that you can check by date.

For example, taking a look at the cost of fuel for the home shows that the average price in January for 100 litres was €57.21.

However, shoot forward a few months to September and the price had gone up to €67.09.

The figures used are updated every week and it is possible to go back a number of years and so providing you with an idea of the rate you should be paying.

We our home energy source is a 2000L propane tank … when we had this system installed during a major home remodel in 2003/2004 the cost of propane was less than electricity. Boy, has that situation changed!
Raised in Hawaii, and with many years in Southern California, what did I know about home heating and the associated costs? well, zip! Just last week I turned the radiators back on and even though we keep the house temp at around 17c the costs through the winter have been astronomical AND with the cost of petroleum rising will go ballistic this winter!
I’m now considering investment in some type of multi-fuel system modification to add to our propane boiler. Wood or wood pellets seem viable but I could use some more advice on these options, associated costs and where I can source such systems here in the LOT (or France). Merci, Jack
