Guédelon, the DIY castle

castle_1108IF your restoration project is taking up more time than you planned, then spare a thought for Michel Guyot.

He has set himself the task of building a 13th Century castle in the Burgundy countryside using just the tools and techniques of the time.

Michel Guyot and a team of experts scoured the French countryside to find castles from a similar period so that they could draw up plans of their own.

And now the castle of Guédelon is beginning to take shape as a tower in one corner, leads to surrounding walls, the foundations of other towers and a gatehouse.

The work is expected to take more than 20 years to complete, but from what was a clearing in the woods and a disused quarry, the building is slowly rising from the ground.

The site is also open to visitors and you are able to see the handiwork of the artisans and watch as they cut stone, forge nails and mix mortar from quicklime.
