THE village of Villefranche du Périgord is a place full of history, giving you a hint of days from another age.
On a cold winter’s morning the village is still busy with people heading to the shops or just chatting in the street.
And as the low sun slowly casts its light across the village, scenes and images begin to emerge.
There are narrow alleyways that lead off down the side of houses, small wooden doorways etched with deep groves by the weather and time.
The smell of wood burning fires drift past you as you walk alongside the thick walls of buildings as snippets of conversations are caught in the cold air.
Founded in 1261 by Alphonse de Poitiers, Villefranche du Périgord is a classic bastide town with the roads at right angles and a large covered market.
The French held it during the wars with England, who held the town of Monpazier about 15 miles away.
Today the town is a mix of many nationalities and is popular as both a place to retire or to buy a holiday home in.
But the character of Villefranche du Périgord has not been diluted by this as its history lies just below its surface.
It is easy to imagine yourself in another time.
