THE risk of a natural disaster or a major industrial accident occurring near your home is quite small.
But the French ministry of ecology has a website that allows you to check different regions for the risks they may face.
The site provides information on natural risks such as avalanche, flooding and forest fire, as well as extensive lists of other websites if you require more detail.
There are also sections that deal with the dangers posed by factories, nuclear reactors and the transport of hazardous materials.
But it is likely to be the search facility for the communes of France that will provide the most useful information.
It is a very simple process, just type in the name of your commune and the site returns details of any risks within the area as well as a historical record of past events.
I typed in my own commune of Loubejac and I found out that we had strong winds in the early 1980’s and a bit of flooding in the late 1990’s.
