THERE were still a few rough corners to rub down, and even a floor to lay, but the EcoCentre2 opened its doors to visitors recently, showcasing ‘green’ building techniques and technologies.
Found just outside the small town of La Coquille, in the north of the Drodogne, the new centre has been built to offer training courses and advice to people interesting in everything from straw bale houses to wind power generation.
At the weekend event there was the chance to chat with retailers of things such as wool based insulation or manufacturers of yurts.
Many of the representatives were willing to chat about the different options open to people, as well as provide an idea of costs and pricing.
The EcoCentre2 is a working example of many different building techniques, including straw and adobe walls, rainwater harvesting, dry toilets and passive solar heating.
The original ecocentre was struggling to provide the training courses on offer, around 1,700 training days a year are currently available.
The new centre aims to offer more courses, with some available in English, as well as provide a library facility and be the base for an ecovillage whose construction is set to start soon.
On the day there were a wide variety of visitors, some showing a keen interest in solar water heating as well as timber framed housing, and I’m sure many went home with new ideas and thoughts zipping around their head.
